White backs, for the case

Most of the money in a movie is blank on one side. It makes a briefcase look full. It is not trying to survive a close-up.

Blank filler is the workhorse. One face is a pale bill. The other face is white. Band a hundred of them and a case reads as money from the doorway. Open it toward a tight lens and the white backs give it up, which is the point.

The $500,000 briefcase is that idea as one product. Closed, it is a black case with a serious label. Open, it is rows of banded filler, white edges showing, and a card in the lid so the prop department knows what the story thinks is in there.

Duffles do the same job

The black bag packed with blank stacks is the bag an extra carries through a lobby. The duffle with printed faces spilling out is for the shot where the top layer might get seen. Still props. Still not tender. If a hand reaches in and picks up a single bill, that bill should be full print from the previous page, sitting on top of this.

  • Use filler when the case stays closed, or opens only in a wide.
  • Use it when you need height and weight, not a readable serial.
  • Switch the top layer to full print the moment a hand enters the frame.
